I know this sounds ridiculous, but it works! I used Peltex because it is non-woven so it won’t unravel, but won’t stretch as much as felt, another non-woven material. However, felt will work if you don’t have access to Peltex. The Peltex is used to make the covering of the last, and playdough plus sand gets stuffed inside of it.

I use Martha Stewart’s playdough recipe – https://www.marthastewart.com/268090/homemade-play-dough. You might make a double batch for children’s lasts, since you will be making them for both feet, and perhaps a quadruple batch for adult lasts.

You will mix the playdough with sand, perhaps 50/50. After you have sewn your Peltex “outer skin” of the two pieces of each last, stuff the mixture into it.
