This video shows how to make a children’s derby shoe for expediency, but the same steps apply to the making of a derby shoe in any size. A derby shoe as I understand it is one in which the heel section overlaps the vamp, which is the part that covers the toes. The vamp usually includes a tongue. But you can liberally change the components, for instance you might have the vamp overlap the heel section – and cut out the tongue! You would use these same instructions if you wanted to make a desert or “chukka” boot. Once you learn the basic process, improvise as you like!
